With a staff compliment of 20 people, the Firm provides a wide range of professional services in the areas of audit & assurance, taxation, business information technology, succession & estate planning, business advisory and risk management.

 

The Opportunity:

We are currently looking for an individual to join our diverse team as a Tax Specialist. In this role you will work with our clients and colleagues to deliver customized tax strategies, carry out unique tax research and manage our T1 client pool.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare corporate reorganizations to assist with client needs and tax planning

  • Prepare succession planning for corporate clients while ensuring their priorities are being heard and we make the best plan for their needs within the Income Tax Guidelines

  • Perform technical research and documentation for individual cases and client questions

  • Supervise junior staff with completing simple elections (ex. CDAs)

  • Assist with any tax audits, reviews, assessments, voluntary disclosures and notices of objections

  • Review legal documents such as articles of incorporation, purchase agreements and amalgamation agreements and discuss items of concern with partners and clients

  • Reviewing and managing personal income tax returns (T1)

  • Mentorship & managing staff

  • Technology & process development and improvement; contribute to the development of new ideas and approaches to improve work processes

  • Assisting with complex matters for year-end engagement annual tax compliance, as well as review of complex corporate tax returns.

  • Reviewing and managing trust tax returns (T3)

 

Skills and Experience:

  • CPA designation or similar relevant designation, such as legal degree

  • Completion of the CICA In-Depth Tax Course

  • Experience in the agricultural sector, or a desire to work with clients in this sector, would be considered an asset

  • Minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience in Canadian Tax focusing on owner-managed business

  • Experience with tax planning and execution for owner-managed business, client solution development, client communications, monitoring and meeting tax deadline, maintaining documentation, and management of client expectations.

  • Demonstrated leadership and team building skills

  • Willingness to take on tasks outside of the normal scope of work when needed in order to deliver on committed results

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Able to provide client advice with a high degree of confidence and accurately respond to challenging questions

  • Able to deeply understand clients’ businesses and maintain strong relationships

  • Eager to assist clients in developing and implementing tax planning strategies

  • Strong time management abilities, self-motivated and able to work independently

 

Working Conditions:

  • Flexible within the range of 7:30-5:30, Monday to Friday

  • Overtime is required throughout the year based on client tax deadlines and other project-related work

  • Local travel to client sites is required as needed as is travel within the Maritimes with overnight stays for conferences / professional development
